Unless you have already planned your vacation getaway and the money has already been spent on the reservation, you may want to know that there are several things you can do to help save a large portion of your vacation money. Whether you are planning a trip to the beautiful coastal area of Santa Cruz or even to the majestic mountains that run between Santa Cruz and San Mateo or even if you plan to hop in the car and take a short drive to San Francisco or Los Angeles for a few days, be sure to keep the following tips handy to help you save a little money when you call to book vacation getaway.

 Forget Holiday Travel

Holiday travel is packed with fliers and drivers trying to make it home for family gatherings and other holiday events. It’s a great time to travel if you plan to spend plenty of time at the home of as relative, but if you need to stay in a hotel, the holidays can be the worst time of year to travel. While you may want to take a vacation before Christmas so you can be at home to watch your grandparents open that great new television you bought them, you may want to wait until the day after Christmas to take them their gift. Booking between the day after Christmas and the day before New Year’s Eve is a great way to save money on flights and you will also find that hotels are going to charge less during these dates as well. If you want to head out to a hot and sunny location where you can bask in the sun while sipping fruity drinks with little umbrellas, you may find it interesting that booking a flight from Los Angeles to Cabo San Lucas will only cost around $400 and that is round-trip leaving on December 26 and returning December 30. That price is not bad at all for a four night, five-day getaway.  You can find hotels in Cabo San Lucas during those dates for as low as $68 per night.

Stay in Town

While your friends or coworkers may be spending their last dime to take a family vacation to the beach in the middle of the summer, you may want to consider staying right in the city and venturing out for some local excursions. Sure, the beach is nice but have you really taken the time to get to know the many things that make your own local area a great place to live? Many cities have areas where residents or visitors can spend the day hiking, camping or spending time on the local waterways and it can be a huge amount of fun. If it is a city nearby, check out the local hotel rates and you may be surprised at how low a hotel will cost in a non-tourist area of the country. If you want to get away during the winter you will most likely find that hotels in locations like San Francisco, Los Angeles and even cities on the east coast including Orlando and Miami are anywhere from 8 percent to more than 15% lower cost than they are during the summertime.

Flexibility

When people are planning vacations they usually know exactly when they want to leave and when they want to return. Sure, this is the way things are usually planned but it helps tremendously if you allow yourself to be a little flexible in the dates you can leave and return as well as the hotel you want to stay in. If you tend to stay only at the Hilton while on vacation or you have a personal favorite when it comes to family resorts, you should consider staying at a lower end hotel to save a lot of money or checking out other family resorts that you may have never considered before. When you spend less on the hotel, you will have more for other things including sightseeing, souvenirs or taking advantage of local attractions and fun events.  Flexibility is not only for the hotel that you stay in but also, and most importantly, for the flight that you take to get where you are going. If you really want to leave the day before Christmas or New Year’s or even on the first day of Spring break, you will find that if you wait one day and leave later, you can save anywhere between five and twenty-five percent on the overall cost of the flight. When it comes to airline tickets, even five percent can be a pretty large amount of money.
